A sitting is an opportunity for you to connect to spirit through a medium. It begins before your appointment with the medium's preparation through mediation, relaxation, and prayer. Once the sitting starts, you'll find that it's mostly a listening experience wherein the medium listens to spirit, and then conveys the messages coming through as clearly and accurately as possible. This continues for a period of time until the medium has conveyed all the information received, at which point the sitting draws to a close. [back to top] What kind of information comes through during a sitting? There are two basic kinds of information that come through during a sitting. The first is identifying information about the spirit communicator(s), which may include details such as their relationship to you (for example, mother or father, husband, wife, child, friend, neighbor, etc.), the kind of job or occupation they had, and/or their personality. General physical details, such as what they looked like, may also come through, as well as health conditions they had prior to their passing. Names may or may not come through, and one or more spirit communicators may come during any particular sitting. The second kind of information that comes through are the messages what spirit wants to tell you. This may include practical information, sometimes as straightforward as "check the ignition on your car" to deep spiritual advice, such as how to best address issues of forgiveness in a particular relationship. No two sittings are ever alike. [back to top] What's my role during a sitting? Your role is simply to listen and let the medium know whether or not the information coming through to you is completely clear and understandable. Simple responses such as "yes, I can take that name" or "no, I cannot understand that information" are best. Please do not provide the medium with information ahead of time or "leading" information. Sometimes the messages will come through in pieces, or the medium will have to discern more than one communicator, so patience is key. Regardless, you should not have to "stretch" any information that comes through. [back to top] What do your clients feel and experience during a sitting? There is a broad range of reactions to hearing from loved ones during the course of a sitting, but mostly I see a lot of laughter and a lot of tears--this work that touches the heart, after all, and such feelings are to be expected. Sometimes people are also amazed by what comes through, and in turn, the advice to "expect the unexpected" is sound. In general, though, many of my clients report feelings of peace, reassurance, and closure. Communication during a mediumship session can often be a beautiful and uplifting experience. [back to top] What happens after a sitting? After a sitting is over, clients typically take some time to digest the experience, and a part of that process may be to share the information they received with family or friends. During these conversations, it's not unusual that something that didn't make sense to the sitter during the sitting was actually a message for another loved one. For this reason, I encourage my clients to take notes or audiotape their sittings (clients wishing to do so must bring their own notes, recording devices and tapes). Almost always, something that didn't make sense during the course of the sitting makes perfect sense just a little later on. [back to top] What should I do to prepare for a sitting? Is there anything I should bring? There are a number of things you can do ahead of time to make your sitting a more enjoyable experience. The most important thing is simply to relax and come with an open mind. In turn, if you typically meditate, workout, or engage in some other relaxing activity such as playing an instrument, you may consider doing this before your sitting. Let go of the stresses of day-to-day life, and prepare to listen to spirit. All clients are also encouraged to prepare a list of family and friends who have crossed over, including details such as birthdays, anniversaries, dates of crossing over, and family-tree relationships when possible. Please note, this is for the client's private reference only during the sitting, not the medium's. Many, many times, clients will focus so hard on a particular person that they miss when another spirit is coming through. In turn, these lists can be quite helpful. Clients who will be attending a sitting in person, and are hoping to hear from someone in particular, may also consider bringing with a personal item of the party who has crossed over. Metals work well, but even greeting cards (sealed envelopes are fine) have been helpful. Please understand this is not necessary, nor does it guarantee that a particular spirit will come through during the sitting. However, at times it can be helpful in establishing a connection. [back to top] How soon after a loved one's passing can I arrange a mediumship session? There is no set time clients must wait to arrange a sitting after a loved one's passing. However, please note that mediumship is not a substitute for professional grief counseling. In turn, sittings are most beneficial when clients are not in crisis, or in the deepest stages of grief (generally the first three months after a loss.) There are many theories that try to explain how mediumship works. The explanation that makes the most sense to me is the idea of mental telepathy, or thought transference, on a grand scale. If you can hold the idea that we are essentially spirits at our core here as are our loved ones spirits in the hereafter then both "us" and "them" are really of two like minds. How many times have you told someone close, "I was just thinking that!", or knew who was on the phone before you picked it up? I believe these everyday occurrences are just an inkling of what happens in mediumship. Some people say, "mediums are just mind readers". But maybe that's just it--except that we're not "reading the mind" of our sitters. Instead, we're understanding the mind, the mental thoughts, of those who are communicating to us from spirit. [back to top] Is mediumship innate or learned? As spiritual beings, we all have the capacity to engage in spiritual communication with people here, and in the hereafter, to a greater or lesser extent. Mediums are simply people who have been born with, and/or developed, heightened sensitivities for this kind of communication. We have refined our skills to be able to help bring through spirits who have crossed over, and the messages they wish to relay to us. While some mediums believe their abilities have been consistent and unchanging from the start, I believe we can also unfold, develop and improve upon our natural talents. Meditation and practice are key. [back to top] How do mediums "pick up on" information from spirit? To pick up on
messages from spirit, we may see images in our "mind's eye" and hear
sounds in our "mind's ear". Some of us can pick up on tastes or
smells, and many of us can pick up on strong emotions or the physical
conditions of the communicator prior to their passing. Messages
may come through directly, as in words or phrases, symbolically, or
metaphorically. There's also a degree to which there is just a "knowing" that comes through. Each medium tends to have some
senses that are more developed than others; no two mediums are exactly
alike. Answer: Attend a class or a teaching retreat with Dr. Rom! (events posted from time to time)...or: If you are a
person interested in developing your mediumistic abilities, I recommend
three first steps: Meditate, Listen, and Trust. First,
meditate as much as
you can (daily is ideal) to build up your ability to sustain a relaxed
and clear mindset. In the beginning you may be able to do this
only for a few minutes, then with practice for longer periods of
time. At the least, you will learn to relax yourself easily and
reduce stress effectively; at the most, you'll be fine tuning your
receptivity to communication from spirit. Second, learn to listen
to spirit--understand that what you will be receiving may be quite
subtle at first; don't expect to be hit over the head with a baseball
bat, so to say, and stay open to a wide range of impressions.
Finally, trust what you do receive. I cannot emphasize this
enough. Your first impression is the right one, and practice will
lead you back to that conclusion time and time again. For more
